The Institute is a central scientific institution of the Matica slovenska. Its major focus is on research into Slovak history. Within its scientific-research activity the Institute aims to meet the following long-term tasks: (i) issuing historical sources on Slovak history; (ii) ethnogenesis of the Slovak nation; (iii) development of the Slovak-Hungarian ethnic border from the early Middle Ages; (iv) the Slovak national and political agenda from the late 18th century; (v) the history of Matica slovenská; (vi) communism in Slovakia; and (vii) Slovak political exile after 1945.

While carrying out its research programme the Institute co-operates with scientific institutions and universities in the Slovak Republic and abroad.
