Spending the Winter in Yamaguchi

In recent years, the average daying temperature in the winter can fall below 5 degrees. The cold weather continues from December to later February. During the coldest period, temperatures may fall below freezing and snow can be expected. In order to keep warm and comforatble during the winter months, the following items are necessary :

Heating Equipment :
When heating a room, the cost and safety of the heating equipment should be taken into account.

air conditioner/heater

  • heats air cleanly, but expensive in terms of electrical costs.

oil (kerosene) stove/fan heater

  • economical, but the room should be ventilated every two hours to prevent poisoning by carbon dioxide. Some people find the smell of kerosene unpleasant, although it heats a room quickly and evenly and can be used almost anywhere.

gas stove

  • very warm, but as different types of gas are used throughout the city, caution must be paid to the equipment used, i.e.propane gas heaters cannot be used in an area serviced by city gas and vice versa ; ventilation should also be considered.

kotatsu

  • a futon is placed above and below a table wity an electrical heating element under the tabletop, making a warm pocket in which the feet can be placed ; does not use large amounts of electricity, thus making it more economical than other forms of electric heating. However, it does not heat the room as a whole, and is best when used with a stove or heater.

other methods

  • electric heaters, electric carpets, electric blankets, and electric foot warmers are also available.
